As complete a book as I could want!, February 1, 2007
By
Lizabeth S. (Pennsylvania, United States) – See all my reviews

This book is a treasure trove of information. If you want to know everything about yoga and pilates, this is the book for you. This comprehensive collection–a compilation of several books–is profusely illustrated with full-color photos. In some ways, this book reminds me of DK Guides, which are also full of photos and helpful captions.

The only thing that might have made this hefty tome even better would be spiral binding, which would make it a little easier to use while exercising. Still, this is a minor issue completely eclipsed by the usefulness of this guide. This is a book well worth owning!

Wow, what an amazing book!, July 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Yin Yang Fitness: The Whole Package of Health (Paperback)

I met the authors at a class they were leading in Troy, Michigan and asked to see Kent’s surgical scar to prove to myself that he could really be that fit after such a devastating injury. He was paralyzed from the chest down and the co-author, his wife Maria nearly died of an asthma attack and yet they’re both doing very demanding physical activity and IT REALLY WORKS. The book is extremely encouraging without ever preaching and the 12-week plan is clearly explained and easy to follow. Each page of the workbook part has an inspiring quote. The authors have definitely put a huge amount of research and work into this philosophy of mind, body, spirit health without ever saying "Do this because we said so!" They say "At least try it. It’s worked well for us."
Great work, you two!

Easy introduction… mostly, September 1, 2004
By
Constance S. Edwards “constanceedwards” (Lafayette, CO United States) – See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

This is an excellent introduction to Pilates (Pilates, not Yoga, as the Editorial Review above states!!) for the beginner who wonders what all of the hype is about, but doesn’t want to drop a few hundred on classes or a private instructor. It’s a good taste of things to come, and not a half-bad core strengthening program. Ms. Pohlman’s book and DVD (I use the DVD almost exclusively when traveling, since I can play it on my laptop) are very clear and easy to follow.

The single criticism I have is for the last exercise – Rollovers. Since this, in all other aspects, seems to be a very elementary book, I have no idea why such an advanced maneuver would be included. A second edition should probably replace it with the Seal or Rolling Like a Ball. (Rollovers are extraordinarily difficult for anyone not lucky enough to have a flat chest, Ms. Pohlman!!)

However, that aside, it’s an excellent intro, and unless you have neck or back problems, it’s very comfortably situated in the beginner category.

Good way to start, March 25, 2008
By

I’m retired in the “over 60″ category. I’ve been doing basic Pilates mat for several years. I will never advance pass the intermediate level. This is a good basic program for beginners, and a nice refresher for me as it eases me into the routines when I fall off the habit. It will get you started. No, it is not the true intermediate or advanced level. There are other programs for that. I’m thinking people start too fast too soon. Use it to get started and perhaps a little maintenance of the basics.

A good beginner’s guide, March 31, 2006
By
AKK (New York, NY USA) – See all my reviews

It’s a good “first pilates disk” while you’re trying to figure out if Pilates is the thing for you. Jennifer has a nice voice, shows the exercises well, the workout has a nice pace and flow to it. Don’t attempt rollovers though – it’s a very advanced exercise that for some reason made it on this disk.

The Core Strength Workout: Get Flat Abs and a Healthy Back | Pilates

The Core Strength Workout: Get Flat Abs and a Healthy Back

The perennially popular Yoga, Ballet, and Pilates all owe their success to what has become the latest buzzword in fitness: CORE STRENGTH. Core strength refers to the torso muscles from the glutes and abs to the back and neck those muscles that literally keep you standing tall, strong, and erect. Athletes and dancers have always understood the importance of core strength; as our population ages everyone is beginning to herald workouts that concentrate on these all-essential muscle groups. After years of relying on yoga, pilates, ballet, and various combinations thereof to work these muscles, the fitness industry is now developing routines strictly for core strength.

This review is from: The Core Strength Workout: Get Flat Abs and a Healthy Back (Paperback)

This book is a joy to use. Ms. Karter explains the concepts behind the workouts, then presents the exercises in a graded series of three levels. The pictures are clear and easy to follow. (There are a couple of places where the pictures are a little different than the written explanations; in that case I do what is shown in the pictures.) Each level has its own color code on the outer edge of the page, so you can open the book quickly to the appropriate level.

In the first chapter Ms. Karter explains the reasons for developing the “core muscles,” that is, all the muscles extending from the the base of the neck, down the back and front of the trunk, to the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles support your spine and interior organs, improve your posture, and help you with your balance. Moreover, working on all these muscles together makes your body work more efficiently, which gives you more stamina.

In the next chapter she explains the principles of proper alignment when doing the exercises. She includes a few exercises just for getting lined up correctly. This is very important, as it greatly affects the outcome of doing this work. I found her explanations of these key concepts to be thorough and clear.

The final three chapters contain the exercises, in graded levels. You do each level for at least six weeks before moving on. I found six weeks to be adequate for levels one and two (I’m about to move into level three at this time), however, I have a yoga background. Some people may need more time. I could easily see spending three or more months per level, and that would be fine. There’s no hurry in learning how to move your body in this way!

Most of the exercises are for strengthening the back and abdominal muscles. However, there are also some for stretching the hamstrings, and developing balance, arm strength, and back flexibility. Combining strength with flexibility exercises makes for a very satisfying workout.

After just a few weeks of the first level I did find that I had more energy, and my posture was much taller without me constantly having to straighten myself up. Better yet, whereas I used to use my lower back for various tasks such as vacuuming, now I work more from my inner abdominals, which has saved my back a lot of stress. The added benefit is that my abdominals are getting a workout even when I’m off the exercise mat. Finally, developing my inner abdominal muscles has greatly improved my breathing; I’m taking deeper breaths from the belly on a more regular basis, rather than the shallow breathing which was my former habit.

I’ve found that going back to yoga after working with this book has really enhanced my yoga practice as well. I had always been told in yoga classes to “work from my core,” but as my core was undeveloped, I couldn’t really feel what the instructors were talking about. Now I know, and I really can work from my core.

This is a great book for improving your overall health, stamina, and appearance.

This review is from: The Core Strength Workout: Get Flat Abs and a Healthy Back (Paperback)

Three levels of exercise are taught. The first level seemed a bit easy but it was a very good (and necessary) prep for second level.

The third level can be achived with a little time and effort. The program is not complicated and can be easily followed working out a couple of times a week.

Athletes as well as the deconditioned can use this well organized text and conditioning is focused on but not limited to “the core”.

I liked the author’s explanations, and the tone of the book was great. The pictures were also well done.

However I found it difficult to follow the exercise programs. There was a “pre-workout” section, and then a beginning workout. However I wasn’t sure which workout I should be doing first.

When I started doing the exercises, I wasn’t sure if I was doing the exercises correctly. I didn’t feel a stretch in some cases. Also I wasn’t completely clear on the frequency or duration.

In the end, I switched to a Core workout DVD, which I found much easier to follow.

Mind-Body Fitness For Dummies | Pilates

Mind-Body Fitness For Dummies

Mind-Body Fitness For Dummies is the complete guide to the world of holistic fitness — from Yoga and Tai Chi to Pilates and Qigong. Get started the smart way with expert advice on the essentials, such as breathing, posture, and choosing a program that best fits you and your fitness goals. Filled with instructional photos and illustrations, this book also features expert advice on warming up and cooling down, as well as taking your workout program beyond the basics with coverage of bodywork techniques including NIA and the Alexander technique. Mind-Body Fitness For Dummies will also help answer common questions about equipment and space needs, as well as other issues to consider before committing to a new fitness plan.To reap the holistic benefits of any mind-body exercise, students must relax and stay focused throughout their class. That’s tough to do when the instructor seems to be–or actually is–speaking a foreign language, or when the physical movements seem equally foreign to the body. In Mind-Body Fitness for Dummies, Therese Iknoian, president of the Total Fitness Network, successfully breaks through such “language barriers,” providing beginners with the confidence to explore new classes. Iknoian draws from her impressive health, fitness, and journalistic background to offer the insider’s skinny on 11 holistic exercise methods. She divides these into three basic groups: the centuries-old (yoga, tai chi chuan, and qigong), the “modern classics” (Pilates, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, inversion therapy, and Laban), and the “new kids” (NIA [neuromuscular integrative action], body rolling, chi ball). Then, with plenty of humor and empathy for her reader, she quite ably dissects each. Complete how-to information about each fitness method reads easily and leaves little mystery. The history, philosophy, principles, and postures of each style simply flow across the book’s 300-plus pages; clearly, this project was no chore for its world record-breaking author (race walking, 1994 Indoor 3K) who also holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology. Understandable illustrations, accompanied by Iknoian’s lucid instructions, will help readers practice specific moves and stances before going public. Anyone who has heard about improved physical and mental health as a result of a mind-body exercise regime–but has hesitated to dabble–will be encouraged by this thoroughly enjoyable and educational primer. –Liane Thomas

MindBody Fitness for Dummies, May 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Mind-Body Fitness For Dummies (Paperback)

This book wins the "fitness relevance" award for being virtually the first to apolitically and respectfully describe the major mindful exercise modalities that exist in the West today – in one concise volume. There are hundreds of yoga, tai chi, Pilates, martial arts and derivative publications today each extolling the papal and fitness-related virtues of their own species of mind-body exercise. Therese has put together a utilitarian compendium of the classical and contemporary forms, yes in somewhat abstract form, but always with skillful instruction and quite meaningful resources. This is a wonderfully organized reference for those desiring a wide-angle and descriptive view of the major players in mind-body exercise modalities.

Excellent overview of mind-body exercises, March 1, 2007
By

This review is from: Mind-Body Fitness For Dummies (Paperback)

I borrowed this book to read. I am so pleased with it that I am ordering it. Therese Ikonian is a superior writer. She writes clearly and logically.

This book summarises a great number of different exercise/fitness methods in a clear coherent manner. It gives enough examples of the exercises so that the reader can select what he/she needs. For example her discussions of the Feldenkrais and Alexander methods are the best I have seen.

There are a slew of web sites listed so that it is easy to get more information on any and all of the desciplines discussed. (Of course you can first take a look in the public library or a warehouse bookstore.)

Yoga for the Core: Finding Stability in an Unstable Environment | Pilates

Yoga for the Core: Finding Stability in an Unstable Environment

The core itself is the root of our being, the center of our balance, and in a healthy body is also the root of our movements. Many of us know how to train the outer core but are disconnected from our inner core. By learning how to reconnect to your inner core, you can prevent/recover from injuries, improve your posture, enhance athletic performance and create more efficient movement patterns. In this book you will learn: how to cultivate your core; the difference between the inner and outer core; how to develop strength and ease in both; how to improve pelvic stability; the importance of diaphragmatic movement to stability of the core; the difference between pilates and yoga breathing; the connection between poor core stability and injury; how to recover from injury by improving core stability; practices that will progressively stabilize and strengthen your core. Suzette is a yoga therapist, pilates instructor, and kinesiologist. She has an extensive background in personal training, and is a trainer of trainers. Her experience has shown that people often work too hard at core stability, and instead create rigidity. Rather than cultivating suppleness they create hardness. These two things, rigidity and hardness, prevent you from tapping into the true wisdom of your body.

best pregnancy book out there, November 9, 2007
By

I am a Pilates teacher who recently has three pregnant students. I reviewed many books from my library system and found this one of the absolute best value and advice. Be careful what you read can be extremely contradictory with pilates(which works the abdominal muscels) and pregnancy. This book is sensible and safe. You will certainly get your moneys worth. It is a great reference book for teacher. Have it in your studios.
